Overview
Community Engagement
Build meaningful connections, discover local programs, and participate actively in the Canadian communities where you live, work, and belong.
Settlement is not complete when paperwork is filed and a job is found. True integration happens when newcomers feel they belong—when they know their neighbours, participate in community life, and see themselves as contributors rather than outsiders. For many newcomers to Canada, isolation remains a quiet challenge long after the initial arrival period. Language barriers, unfamiliar community structures, long work hours, and the demands of daily survival can keep people disconnected from the very networks that would support their long-term wellbeing. Research consistently shows that social connection is one of the strongest predictors of newcomer retention and mental health. Global Training Network's community engagement programs address this gap directly.
Our community engagement services help newcomers discover and access local programs, volunteer opportunities, faith communities, recreational activities, and civic participation pathways. We guide participants in understanding how Canadian communities organize themselves—from neighbourhood associations and parent councils to nonprofit boards and municipal advisory committees. Participants learn how to introduce themselves, build relationships across cultural lines, and find spaces where their skills and interests are valued. We also address practical barriers such as transportation, childcare, and scheduling that can prevent participation even when interest is strong.
GTN partners with municipalities, faith-based organizations, settlement agencies, and community groups to create welcoming entry points for newcomer participation. We believe that engaged newcomers enrich the communities they join, and that communities become stronger when diversity is actively included rather than passively tolerated. Programs include community mapping exercises, guided first visits to local organizations, volunteer placement support, and pathways toward deeper civic involvement over time. Whether you want to volunteer at a food bank, join a recreational league, participate in a parent advisory committee, or eventually serve on a nonprofit board, our programs provide the knowledge, connections, and confidence to engage fully in Canadian community life and build the belonging that makes settlement sustainable.
