Overview

Cultural Orientation

Build understanding of Canadian social customs, workplace expectations, and community norms so you can participate fully and confidently in your new home.

Every culture carries its own unwritten rules—how people greet one another, what is considered polite in conversation, how workplaces handle feedback, and what community participation looks like. For newcomers to Canada, these differences can create confusion, missed opportunities, and unnecessary stress during an already demanding transition. A friendly neighbour's casual tone may feel dismissive, a manager's direct feedback may seem harsh, or a social invitation may carry expectations you do not yet understand. Global Training Network's cultural orientation programs bridge that gap with practical, respectful guidance grounded in the realities of Canadian life across provinces and communities.

Our orientation sessions explore the social, professional, and civic dimensions of Canadian culture in ways that honour your background while preparing you for everyday interactions. Topics include workplace communication styles, punctuality and professionalism, social etiquette, understanding Canadian holidays and traditions, navigating public services with confidence, and building respectful relationships across diverse communities. We address common culture shock experiences—the honeymoon phase, frustration, gradual adjustment, and acceptance—and provide strategies for adapting without losing your identity. Participants learn how Canadian multiculturalism shapes daily life, what to expect in parent-teacher conferences, how small talk functions in professional settings, and why certain behaviours that are normal at home may be interpreted differently here.

GTN delivers cultural orientation for individuals, families, and groups through partner organizations, faith communities, and settlement programs. Our facilitators create safe spaces where questions are welcomed and cultural differences are explored with curiosity rather than judgment. Sessions can be tailored for specific audiences, including youth adjusting to Canadian schools, spouses entering the workforce for the first time, or professionals preparing for client-facing roles. Whether you arrived last month or have been in Canada for several years, cultural orientation helps you interpret situations accurately, reduce misunderstandings, and engage more fully in the communities where you live, work, and worship.
